About

I approach paper cutting in many ways. Here I am showing my two main ways of drawing, with a knife and painting with paper. If I’m making a classic paper cut, I sketch first then use the tip of my scalpel as I would a pencil or pen. I cut pattern and texture to indicate space and depth. My technique is to combine the traditions of silhouetted images with extra line, pattern and emphasis. The other main way I work with cut paper is collage or painting with paper. I plan the image and then use many layers of paper – often printed waste paper – to build up the picture and to add tone, texture and depth.
